The conductor Robertas Šervenikas (b.1966) graduated from St. Petersburg Conservatoire in 1995, where he studied choir conducting (with doc. T. Chitrova), opera and symphony conducting (Prof. V. Fedotov). Since 1993 he has been collaborating with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (currently, the second conductor), is being invited to conduct Lithuanian, Šiauliai and Klaipėda Chamber Orchestras. Since 1996 R. Šervenikas has been leading the Lithuanian Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. The last few years have been particularly successful for the young conductor. In 1997, Mstislav Rostropovich invited R. Šervenikas to conduct the Philharmonie der Nationen Orchestra during the Evian Festival in France. They conducted Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi during this festival next year. In 1998, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by R. Šervenikas toured Germany and gave concerts in prestigious Alte Oper, Hamburg Musikhalle and Cologne Philharmonic halls with great success. For this tour, apart from the traditional symphony programme, the conductor has prepared the world premiere of Sonnengesang by S. Gubaidulina, dedicated to M. Rostropovich (solo performed by M. Rostropovich). In 1999, during the Vilnius Festival, the orchestra conducted by R. Šervenikas (solo by the cellist David Gering) performed the Lithuanian premiere of the same opus; the orchestra performed together with Mūza Rubackytė in the famous Amsterdam Concertgebouw hall. Later there were successful concerts during the famous Forbach, Reims and Berlioz festivals in France, Perelada in Spain, R. Šervenikas conducted during the Reingau and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern festivals in Germany. Together with National Symphony Orchestra he toured Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Latvia. The performance of the Lithuanian Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra led by R. Šervenikas during the young.euro.classic festival that took place in 2002, Berlin, was especially successful. 13 August, Der Tagesspiegel remarked: Symphony No. 2 by A. Skriabin made the greatest impression. The rich Wagnerian sound, discrete subtleties of connecting episodes and development reaching powerful dramatic culmination created by R. Šervenikas has demonstrated international class. Since 1997 R. Šervenikas has been participating in all festivals of contemporary music in Lithuania (Gaida, Jauna muzika, Iš arti, Marių klavyrai). His repertory includes many opuses by Lithuanian composers. He has prepared concerts of music by J. Juzeliūnas, F. Bajoras, A. Šenderovas, V. Barkauskas, S. Vainiūnas and E. Balsys, has recorded CDs of compositions by O. Narbutaitė, B. Kutavičius, V. Bartulis, A.Malcys, J. Juozapaitis, A. Šenderovas and A. Martinaitis. R. Šervenikas has conducted premieres of opuses by O. Narbutaitė, A. Martinaitis, V. Barkauskas, F. Bajoras, V. Bartulis, A. Malcys, J. Juozapaitis, A. Rekašius, L. Narvilaitė, G. Sodeika, R.Šerkšnytė, M. Urbaitis and V. Švedas. R.Šervenikas has also conducted Cairo, Frankfurt, St. Petersburg Philharmonic and Russian Symphony Orchestras. The cellists M. Rostropovich, D. Gering and E. Dindo, trumpet M. Andre, trombonist Ch. Lindberg, violinists M. Fedotov, I. Grubert and R. Katilius, pianists M. Rubackytė, P. Geniušas, M. Pletniov and D. Macujev, clarinettist A. Budrys and other famous musicians have performed together with orchestras under the baton of R. Šervenikas.
