Vytautas Sondeckis was born in 1972 in Vilnius, Lithuania, into a musical family (his father Saulius Sondeckis is a renowned conductor and former pupil of Mstislav Rostropovich). At the age of five he began studies on the piano and received his first cello lessons at the age of six. At the age of sixteen he was accepted into the Special Music School of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied with Anatoli Nikitin.
In 1993, Sondeckis won first prize in the International Cello Competition in Murcia, Spain, and received an Honorary Special Prize at the Virtuoso 2000 festival in St. Petersburg, Russia. Subsequently he was invited by various prestigious orchestras including the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg. Concert tours have taken Sondeckis to countries throughout Kurope to critical acclaim. Since the autumn of 1996, Vytautas Sondeckis has been a student of David Geringas at the Musikhochschule Lubeck. In the same year he was appointed Assistant Principal Cello of the NDR Symphony Orchestra, of which Christoph Eschenbach is music director.
